Expert Guide: Visiting Jomblang Cave in Indonesia

Why Jomblang?

Jomblang Cave, located in Southeast Yogyakarta is one of Indonesia’s most iconic destinations. After dropping into a vertical sinkhole in a man powered pulley system, you'll arrive in a mystical underground forest where “heavenly light” beams shine through a ceiling opening, a moment that adventure seeking travelers dream of.

The History

Goa Jomblang, is part of a system of ancient vertical caves in Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, formed thousands of years ago by the collapse of a massive underground cavern. This dramatic sinkhole created a 60-meter-deep shaft, now surrounded by lush forest known as the underground jungle. While the cave has existed for millennia, it remained relatively unknown until recent decades, when it gained attention from local adventurers and spelunkers.

Today, Jomblang is not only famous for its geological beauty but also steeped in local lore. Some believe the site holds spiritual significance, with its eerie silence and surreal light beams adding a mystical aura. In the early 2000s, it opened to tourists in a controlled, eco-conscious format. Since then, it has become one of Indonesia’s most iconic natural attractions, especially known for the “Light of Heaven,” a phenomenon where sunlight pierces through the cave's mouth, creating an ethereal spotlight onto the forest floor below.
